💙 Children’s Mental Health Week 💙 Next week it is Children's Mental Health Week. The theme for 2026 is 'This is My Place', and our aim is to help our pupil's feel they belong. We know that our sense of belonging as individuals, in our friendships, in school, and in communities plays a vital role in our mental health and wellbeing. To know our place and really feel part of our environment is a basic human need. It can have powerful and long-lasting impacts in lots of areas of our lives, including our physical and mental health, education, employment and relationships. When we feel that we belong, it empowers us to contribute to the world and make a real difference. Every class will be talking about belonging throughout the week, and will have some fun and engaging activities planned to compliment this. We will also be focusing on one of the five steps to wellbeing every day. These are - Connect, Take Notice, Give, Learn and Be active. On Friday 13th, we have Dress to Express day, where children can come dressed in clothes they love and express themselves through their outfits. We be celebrating our pupil’s talents and uniqueness in the Final of ‘OVPA's got talent’. In the afternoon, our parents and carers are invited in to school for Open Learning so the children can share all their wonderful achievements. There is a lot lined up, and we can't wait to share all the great things we get up to centered around our mental health and wellbeing. Mrs Ferguson PSHE & Wellbeing lead

The penultimate week brings some HUGE shout-outs 📣 🌟 🌟 Well done to Year 3 who shared their puppetry on stage at The White Rock Theatre this week. Year 3 have been working with local artists at The Contemporary as part of the Pearls of the Sea project. A collaboration between The Contemporary and The White Rock provided an opportunity to showcase the work to parents and friends. The children were completely immersed in their puppetry and came to life on stage, having the most wonderful time. 🌟 It has been Mock SATs week for Year 6 as part of their preparation for the real SATs in May. Giving the pupils the opportunity to practise the papers and knowing what will happen during that week, provides clarity and reassurance. They even practised having a special SATs breakfast to ensure tummies were full and they were hydrated. We were so impressed with the children’s attitudes and how they performed. We have no doubt that they will absolutely smash the real thing in May. Well done Year 6 and your fabulous supporting staff team. 🌟 Good luck to all our pupils taking part in Time to Dance at The White Rock Theatre next week. We cannot wait to see you shine on stage and make us super proud. The last week of term is going to be a busy and exciting one, with lots of wonderful things planned before the children have a well-deserved break. 🎉 Happy weekend all 👋🏼 Mrs Campbell & The OVPA Team 💙

An exciting week for many of our pupils with Year 6 visiting Herstmonceux Science Centre. Set against the stunning backdrop of the former Royal Greenwich Observatory, the day was a perfect blend of history, science and hands-on discovery. Years 4 & 5 continued their amazing film making where they learned how to use a range of technical equipment and make props. This was a unique opportunity for our pupils which they fully enjoyed. This term’s gymnastics and dance lessons are challenging the children’s abilities and they are are enjoying using a range of equipment as they refine their agilities. Great job everyone! 💙

It’s been a pleasure to welcome Rich Pringle as a mentor for some of our young people, supporting emotional wellbeing, confidence, and self-regulation. Rich’s sessions are calm, supportive, and child-led, using conversation, practical activities, and creative approaches to help pupils explore feelings, build coping strategies, and feel more settled and confident in school. Year 4 & 5 started an exciting film project with the Bright Foundation. The first session went really well creating the story and script which they will film and produce themselves supported by the brilliant team. This is a really great project backed by BAFTA, Disney and the British Museum and the summation of the project will be Hastings first ever Children's International Film Festival taking place in June 2026 of which the group has been invited to. This term is packed with exciting events and visitors to enhance our pupils’ learning and expand their minds. It’s wonderful to see the benefit these cultural experiences bring and the pure enjoyment from the children. Happy weekend all Mrs Campbell & The OVPA Team 💙

The second week of term whizzes by and already there is so much learning taking place across the school 💙 Plenty of creative opportunities with Dance, Music and Art in full flow, which we know hugely benefits our pupils. We have two dance squads taking part in Time to Dance at The White Rock Theatre at the end of this term. They have been working hard, perfecting their routines ready for their big performance on stage. 💃🏻 🕺🏻 Our Chess team continue to practise regularly so they are ready for their next competition. Their dedication is admirable. ♟️ We said goodbye to Mrs Hurst on Friday and wished her well as she starts her maternity leave. We look forward to hearing about the arrival of her baby.👶🏼 Have a wonderful weekend everyone and keep up the excellent work Mrs Campbell & The OVPA Team 💙

The reading gap Approx one in four pupils move to secondary school without having met the expected standard in the key stage 2 national reading test. This holds many of them back in secondary school, both in their English lessons and more widely across the curriculum. /1— Mary Myatt (@MaryMyatt) August 5, 2025
